EDF has entered into a long-term agreement with Ampeak Energy to optimise the AW1 battery energy storage system (BESS) located at Uskmouth in South Wales.

The collaboration aims to enhance the 120MW/240MWh battery facility’s ability to store and release electricity to the grid during peak demand.

Utilising EDF’s Powershift platform and its trading team, the company seeks to ensure the AW1 project delivers power more efficiently, aligning with the times of highest demand.

EDF Wholesale Market Services commercial director Stuart Fenner said: “We’re proud to be working with Ampeak Energy on this landmark project. Battery storage is key to helping the UK reach its climate goal, and our partnership will unlock long-term value from one of the UK’s most exciting clean energy sites.”

With the financial aspects of the AW1 project settled and EDF’s involvement confirmed, Ampeak Energy is preparing for Uskmouth to become a key battery-powered energy location.

Ampeak Energy COO David Taaffe said: “AW1 is our flagship battery project, and our partnership with EDF gives us the confidence to deliver lasting value and build momentum towards the creation of one of the largest battery sites in the UK, which can be a catalyst for local and national regeneration.”

In July this year, reports emerged that EDF was planning to reduce its overseas workforce and withdraw from certain international nuclear projects to concentrate on a domestic construction programme under its new CEO Bernard Fontana.

In the same month, Reuters reported that EDF was exploring options to attract capital for its North American and Brazilian renewables divisions, including the potential sale of stakes of up to 50%.

An EDF spokesperson confirmed on 16 July 2025 that the company was considering various ways to bring in capital, as reported by Reuters.

The EDF power solutions spokesperson stated: “We are studying the possibility of opening the capital of some of our subsidiaries to partners.”

“EDF and Ampeak Energy partner to enhance battery storage facility in South Wales” was originally created and published by Power Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.
