Digital Nomad in Kazakhstan: The $1,000/Month Destination Nobody Talks About keeps showing up in conversations for a reason. The story below covers what is actually happening, where the trade-offs sit, and what a careful reader should take from it.

Kazakhstan’s B12-1 category visa, branded as the Neo Nomad Visa, is one of the simplest digital nomad visas to obtain.

    Requirements:

    • Proof of $3,000/month stable income from a foreign source (bank statements for the last 6 months)
    • Valid foreign passport
    • Medical insurance covering your stay
    • Clean criminal background check
    • A Kazakh mobile phone number (you can buy a SIM at the airport for about $1)

If you hold a passport from the US, EU, Canada, Australia, UK, or any of the 48 exempt countries, you can enter Kazakhstan visa-free for 30 days. Many digital nomads start with this to test the waters before applying for the Neo Nomad Visa.

Timeline and cost: Processing takes a maximum of 5 business days. The visa fee ranges from $100-200 depending on nationality. Valid for 1 year, renewable once (maximum 2 years total).

What you can do: Work remotely for any foreign company or clients. Run a freelance business. Travel freely in and out of Kazakhstan during the visa period.

What you cannot do: Work for a Kazakh employer. Take a local job. The visa is exclusively for remote workers with foreign income sources.

    For comparison:

    Portugal’s D8 visa requires $3,500/month and takes 60+ days.

Thailand’s DTV requires $16,000 in savings.

    Estonia needs $4,500/month.

    Kazakhstan: $3,000/month, under a week.
